Dr. Mills, 74, Story County Coroner, Dies

NEVADA - Dr. D. G. Mills, 74, a practicing physician at McCallsburg for 40 years and Story county coroner for 12 terms, approximately 24 years, died at 10 a. m. Tuesday at the Iowa sanitarium. Death was due to a malignant heart growth and complications.

Dr. Mills had been ill at his home in McCallsburg since last Wednesday and was brot to the sanitarium here Saturday.

A well known figure in Story county medical and political circles for many years. Dr. Mills was born in Illinois July 7, 1861. While a boy he moved with his parents to a farm five miles northeast of Maxwell. He attended the State University of Iowa, from which school he received his medical degree in 1896. He started practice in McCallsburg the same year and remained an active practicing physician there until his recent illness.

He was chosen county coroner about 25 years ago and, after serving several terms, relinquished the post to another. Dr. Mills' successor died shortly after taking office, and Dr. Mills was named to fill the unexpired term. He was reelected several times and was serving as county coroner at the time of his death.

He was a member of the Story county Medical association, the American Medical association, the Masonic lodge at Zearing and active in numerous civic affairs in McCallsburg.

Surviving him are his wife; two sons, Guy W. Mills, McCallsburg and Edward Mills, at the veteran's hospital, Knoxville; one daughter, Mrs. C. T. Knutson, Bricelyn, Minn; three brothers, Dr. Frank Mills, Ottumwa, W. E. Mills, Maxwell, and C. C. Mills, Bigsby, Okla., and one sister, Mrs. Rose Cheecham, Colton, Cal.

Funeral arrangements were not completed early Tuesday afternoon. The body is at the Morfoot funeral home in Nevada.

Dr. Mills Services To Be Held Friday

McCALLSBURG - Funeral services for Dr. D. G. Mills, 74, county coroner who died Tuesday morning, will be held here Friday, with services from the home at 1:30 p. m. and from the Presbyterian church at 2 p. m., the Rev. C. B. Driver, Nevada, in charge. Burial will be in the Warren township cemetery.
