Violet Ilene Coughenour was born Nov. 21, 1921, in Colo, to Isaac and Agnes (Bowers) Coughenour. She graduated from Colo High School in 1939. During World War II, she worked at the Consolidated Airplane Factory office in San Diego, where "Rosie the Riveter" also worked. She returned to Iowa after the war. On Sept. 8, 1946, she married Wendell Peterson in Colo. They farmed in the Ellsworth and Radcliffe area. She was active in the community; she was a Sunday school teacher and Bible school superintendent, ALCW president, Girl Scout leader and 4-H leader. In 1985, she moved to Ames and operated Scandia Imports and Tea Room for 10 years with her daughter, Jane. She continued her Norwegian painting as an artist and teacher of traditional rosemaling, which was an important part of her life for many years. She moved with Jane to Virginia, where she worked as a retail associate. She really enjoyed her time on the East Coast and talked of it often. They moved back to the Midwest to Bloomington, Ill., where she worked as a full-time associate at Bergner's Department Store at the age of 75. She was a top sales associate there, where she worked until she was 82, retiring due to failing eyesight. In 2006, she moved to Story City, and resided at Scandia West.

She is survived by one son, James Charles (Lisa) Peterson, of Jewell; one daughter, Jane Faye Peterson (John) Hope, of Tamwoth, England; two grandchildren, Carmel Jane Peterson White and Chad Andrew Peterson; three great-grandchildren, Stacia Nashay Scott, SaBreina White and Christian White; and one great-great grandson, Asher Shively.
