Lamar Edward "Skeeter" Newsome, 88, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at his rural Nevada home. Memorial graveside services, with military rites, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, in Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Lamar was born May 17, 1920, in Monroe, Ga., to John and Leona L. (West) Newsome. He served on the U.S.S. Spencer during World War II, making 24 transatlantic trips. In October 1956, he married Catherine Pricilla McLain in Valdosta, Ga. He retired in 1986 as a carpenter. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Indian Creek Country Club and the Carpentry Union.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine; one son, Gene Newsome and his wife, Sherry, and one daughter, Mari Moreland and her husband, Steve Rippey, all of Nevada; one sister, Ramona (Rupert) Hardin, of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Paul and Matthew Moreland and Ashley and Cody Newsome.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Louis and Robert Newsome.

Chet Ryan Mortuary and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
