Kathleen G. "Gerry" Hartwig, 84, joined our Lord, family, and friends in her heavenly home on October 6th, 2008.

Funeral services were held on Friday, October 10th at St. John Lutheran Church in rural State Center with Pastor Mike Maddick officiating. Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery in State Center. Memorials may be directed to the St. John Lutheran Church in Gerry's name. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home cared for Gerry and her family. Gerry was born on December 5th, 1923, to Harry and Emma (Funke) Wolken in Dillon, Iowa. She graduated from Lamoille High School in 1942. As a young woman, she enjoyed playing basketball, skating, and dancing. She was united in marriage to Dale E. Hartwig on February 15th, 1945, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. To this union, two children were born- Marla and Dean. The couple made their home in rural Colo and worked as farmers. Gerry loved working on the farm driving tractors, grain trucks, and the combine until she was 80 years old.

Gerry was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church, Ladies Aide, and card clubs, playing Sheepshead and 500. She was an avid Iowa State Cyclone and St. Louis Cardinal fan. Gerry loved watching movies and spending time with all of her family. She enjoyed cooking, her specialty being homemade pies.

Surviving Gerry are her son, Dean(Anna) Hartwig of Colo; her five grandchildren, Stacie(Josh) Weires of Des Moines, Brad(Jeri) Donald of Kimball, SD, Candi(Matt) Dole of Winterset, Crisha(Kirk) Miller of Solon, and Corky(John) Angell of Colo; her five great-grandsons and six great-granddaughters; her sister, Marvel Stalzer of Marshalltown; her brother, LaVern Wolken of Green Mountain; and her sister-in-law, Helen Wolken, of Nevada.

Gerry was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale, who died on July 8, 2003; her daughter, Marla Donald, who died on May 19, 2006; three brothers, Raymond Wolken, Glenwood Wolken, and Wallace Wolken; and 5 sisters, Florence Harmon, Alice Goodman, Martha Knott, Gladys Zink, and Lois Escalante.
