WAVERLY — Esther Irene Krutsinger Van Zee, 91, of Waverly, formerly of Ames and Nevada, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly, from Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born Dec. 19, 1916, in Lacona, daughter of Charles Weaver and Lillie Mae Burgett Krutsinger. On March 1, 1942, she married Roy Kenneth Van Zee at First Presbyterian Church, Chariton. He died Oct. 8, 1978.
Mrs. Van Zee graduated from Chariton High School in 1934, then taught first through eighth grades in a one-room country school near Oakley in Lucas County for five years. She and her husband farmed in Lucas County until moving to a farm near Zearing in 1946. In 1960 the couple purchased a farm north of Nevada in Story County, where they had a grain and livestock operation. She was employed in Nevada at an R.H. Donnelley Corp. plant and later as a bank teller. She later went to work at Iowa State University in the agricultural engineering department and later at WOI-TV on the campus, retiring in 1979. She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church and had served as president of the Ames Woman’s Club.
Survived by: a daughter, Carolyn Jean (Daniel) Eggers of Waverly; a son, Roger Calvert (Lori) of Cedar Rapids; three grandsons; two stepgrandsons; and a great-grandson.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Charles Howard Krutsinger; and a grandson.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Sept. 6 at Good Shepherd Chapel of Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly, with burial at 1 p.m. Sept. 8 at Chariton Cemetery, Chariton. Public visitation from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Sept. 6 at Good Shepherd Chapel. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community or to the Mayo Foundation for its Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.
