John R. Pavlat, 75, a longtime Ames resident, died Monday, Aug. 11, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Ames, with a gathering of friends one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in State Center.
John was born July 6, 1933, in Kimball, Neb., the son of Byron and Dorothy (MacAdam) Pavlat. He graduated from Rapid City South Dakota High School. He then graduated from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology before graduating from Iowa State University. While in college, he was a radio/television engineer for KOTA/KOZY and for WOI. He taught at Iowa State University for 41 years in the electrical and computer engineering department.
He married Margaret Westphal on Aug. 15, 1959, in State Center. The couple then lived in Ames where they were members of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church. He focused on his family and educating young people. He enjoyed the continuous learning process in the field of computer engineering.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Pavlat, of Ames; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Debbie Pavlat, and grandchildren, Ashley, Whitney, Andrew and Luke Pavlat, all of Pella.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Andrew's Lutheran Church Music Fund.
Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, in Ames, assisted the family with arrangements.
