(Edith) Loraine Hawley was born Jan. 27, 1910, on a farm in Greene County, north of Scranton, to the late Charles Amos Hawley and Clara Ellen Hayward Hawley. She attended a one-room school until the sixth grade and graduated from Scranton High School in 1927. She went on to attend Iowa State Teachers College, where she graduated in 1931, then taught school for four years in Iowa and 19 years in Downers Grove, Ill. She later retired to the Scranton farm to care for her elderly parents. In 1990, she moved to Northcrest Retirement Community in Ames, where she was instrumental in compiling "The Story of Northcrest."

Her love for travel took her to Europe, Britain, Ireland and Alaska. Her many friends will remember her love for nature and her many trips to Reiman Gardens, especially the butterfly wing, in Ames.

She is survived by four nieces and nephews, Patricia Ann Roberts, of Oro Valley, Ariz., William Charles Hawley, of Santa Monica, Calif., Robert Edward Hawley, of Camarillo, Calif., and Barbara Lyn Landskron, of Hurricane, Utah; and 10 grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her only sibling, Donald Hayward Hawley.

Stevens Memorial Chapel of Ames is assisting the family.
