Obituary:

John Henry Hoberland was born on January 6, 1887, in Sherman Township, Story County to Henry and Elva Sparrow Hoberland. He attended the country school southeast of Zearing, now known as the Barnard school.

On June 10, 1908 he was married to Ethel G. Deal. To this union were born two children; a daughter, Verda, Mrs. Stanley Oaks and a son, Lowell Henry Hoberland.

Mr. Hoberland united with the Bethel Evangelical United Brethren Church on January 24, 1910.

He farmed in Iowa and Minnesota for about ten years after his marriage. Because of ill health, he moved to Zearing in 1922 where he has lived since. During the years after he quit farming, he has been engaged in trucking, school bus driving and carpentering. For the past year he has been working with his son Lowell at the Zearing Livestock Co. He suffered his first attack while at work there a week ago Monday. Saturday he felt much better and spent most of the afternoon downtown. However, at supper he began to suffer severe pains which later in the evening lessened sufficiently for him to retire. During the night he grew worse and the doctor was called. He was taken to St. Thomas hospital in Marshalltown about 7 a.m. sunday. His son, Lowell, and grandson, Dale Fisher accompanied him and stayed with him until after 3 p.m. at which time they thought he was better. His daughter, Verda, Mrs. Stanley Oaks and husband were with him until 6 p.m. but left so he might rest better. Lowell and Dale were called back to the hospital at 6:15 p.m. and stayed by his side until his death at 7:30 p.m. Death came as a result of a heart attack.

Preceeding him in death were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hoberland and his only sister, Ilo Edith Holveck.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel; daughter Verda, Mrs. Stanley Oaks of State Center; a son, Lowell of Zearing; five granddaughters, Arloene, Mrs. Donald Mannetter, of Hubbard; Peggy, Ilo Jean and Loretta Hoberland and Delores Postell of Zearing; five grandsons, Dale Fisher, Danny Hoberland of Zearing, John and Thomas Postell and Harold Oaks of State Center; one great- grandson, Joseph Dale Fisher of Zearing.

He was a kind and loving husband and father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all, especially by his grandchildren to whom he was devoted.
