CW2 Alexander D. Gilchrist ("DJ Nevoc"), 24, of Watertown, N.Y., formerly of Huxley, died Sunday, July 20, in Destin, Fla. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at Ankeny Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 28, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 3424 Forest Ave., in Des Moines. Burial with military honors will be in Ankeny Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Alex was born May 1, 1984, in Des Moines. He lived in Elkhart and Cambridge before moving to Huxley and graduating with honors from Ballard High School. During his senior year in high school he won three national championships as a BMX bike racer and several state and regional championships. He was known for encouraging and teaching others about the sport. His other love was music. At age 14, he started remixing music in the basement, and his career progressed to playing in many clubs around the world as "DJ Nevoc."
He started in the DEP Program while in high school. After boot camp, he was a member of the 82nd Airborne for over two years in infantry. His career progressed to Chief Warrant Officer 2 in May 2007, and he graduated from Aviation Officer Basic Course Flight School in June 2007. He was assigned to the Alpha Troop "Assassins," 6-6 Cavalry Regiment.
He loved his supporting family. He was a very kind, giving person who lived life to the fullest.
He is survived by his wife, Kerri, of Watertown, N.Y.; mother, Jane (Schneider) Gilchrist, and sister, Kaitlyn of Surprise, Ariz.; stepfather, Donald Gilchrist, of Des Moines; mother-in-law, Cheri (John) Hughes, of Alabama; father-in-law, Don (Pam) Pylant, of Alabama; maternal grandmother, Ruth Schneider, of Huxley; grandparents-in-law, Doris Pylant and Patricia (Warren) Tomberlin, of Alabama; sisters-in-law, Kaylee (Tommy) Casey, of Alabama, and Kendall Pylant, of Alabama; step-sister-in-law, Cecilia Hughes, of Alabama; and many other family, friends and several brothers in arms.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Gene Schneider.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Jane Gilchrist Memorial Fund in memory of Alex.
