March 30, 1917-July 20, 2008

Edith Zober, formerly of Ames, died Sunday, July 20, of injuries from an automobile accident in Washington, D.C. Funeral services were Tuesday, July 22, at Bnai Israel Synagogue in Rockville, Md., with burial in Judean Memorial Gardens in Olney, Md.

Edith was born March 30, 1917, in Pittsburgh, Pa. She resided in Ames from the late 1950s to the early 1980s, when she relocated to the Washington, D.C., area.

She grew up in Pittsburgh and earned a bachelor's degree at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and a master's degree in social work from the same university. She also earned a doctorate degree in sociology from Iowa State University.

Prior to coming to the D.C. area in the early 1980s, she lived in Ames, where she was on the faculty of Iowa State University. Prior to that, she held leadership positions at the Girl Scouts of America in Des Moines, and the Iowa Children's Home Society, also in Des Moines.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Martin; one son, Norman Zober, of Rockville, Md.; two grandchildren, Michelle Savarick, of Gaithersburg, Md., and Jeffrey Zober, of East Hills, N.Y.; and four great-grandchildren, Ben, Ian, Jake and Sophie.
