Death Notice
Jim Backoff, 71, of rural Maxwell, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Visitation, with the family present, will be held Thursday, Nov. 20, from 5-7 p.m. at Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada.
Services will be held Friday, Nov. 21, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colo.

James Lee Backoff, 71, of rural Maxwell, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines from complications of head injuries sustained in an auto accident.
He was born on June 28, 1932, in Story County to Joseph and Violet (Adams) Backoff. He married Mildred Hollenbeck on Oct. 1, 1951, in Nevada. He was a retired truck driver. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colo. His hobbies included camping, building models and his tractor. He was a life-long resident of Story County.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mildred, of Maxwell; four daughters, Aloma (and Mike) Hurt of Ames, Regina (and Joel) Whitehead of Maxwell, Ramona (and Ron) Prather of Fernald and Becky (and Jay) Arends of Nevada; three sons, James (and Phyllis) Backoff of Nevada, David Backoff of Maxwell and Robert (and Brienne) Backoff of Nevada; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one aunt, Mildred Sullivan of Afton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Halee Backoff on March 12, 2003; and one great-grandson, Josef Arends.
Funeral services were Friday, Nov. 21, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colo with Father Jon Seda officiating. Burial followed in the St. James Cemetery in Colo. A memorial fund has been established. Chet Ryan Mortuary, Nevada, handled arrangements.
