Eugene Robert Atwood, 72, of Collins, died Saturday, July 5, at his residence of cardiopulmonary arrest.

He was born Nov. 14, 1930, to Floyd and Ila (Crabb) Atwood in Collins. He graduated from Collins High School in 1948 and later from Iowa State University with a two-year degree in farm management operations. He married Dorothy Buck on March 11, 1951, at the Collins United Methodist Church in Collins. He served in the Iowa Army National Guard. He farmed in the Collins-Maxwell area. He retired in 1996. He was a member of the Collins United Methodist Church, was past president of the Collins School Board and past board member of the Collins Lions Club. He was a 50-year member of Fervent Masonic Lodge #513 A.M. and F.M. of Collins. He served as Jasper County soil commissioner for 15 years, was a 50-year member of the Isabelle chapter of the Eastern Star #271 in Colo.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Atwood of Collins; two sons, Mark (and Merily) Atwood of Collins and Jim (and Jody) Atwood of Ames; a daughter, Diana (and Bob) Oswalt of Colo; nine grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother, William Atwood of Collins; and two sisters, Carol (and Glenn) Head of Madison, N.J., and Linda Lein of Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Ila; and a son, Herb.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 9, at the Collins United Methodist Church in Collins. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery in Collins. Fredregill Funeral Home, Collins, handled arrangements.
