LOIS ATKINSON ONE OF THREE KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT IN KANSAS

Collins, Oct. 28—Particulars of the tragic death of Lois Atkinson, age 19, Collins girl, which occurred at a hospital at Lawrence, Kansas, October 22, were learned when her body was brought back to Collins and funeral services held Wednesday.

She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. H. Atkinson of near Collins and had been staying with her sister Mrs. Fred Lakin, at Perry, Kansas.

She, with a party of other young people were returning home from a high school football game, the others in the party being Fay Oliver, John Kerby and Morris Plummer. They were waiting at the crossing for a west bound Union Pacific train and as it passed they started on across, not noticing the east bound train the sight of which had been obscured by the other train.

The automobile was struck and thrown almost as high as the top of the smoke stack of the engine, picked up and carried several feet and then thrown down a steep embankment of 19 feet.

John Kerby was instantly killed. The others were taken to the hospital at Lawrence where Fay Oliver died at 10:30 that night and Miss Atkinson at 7:30 the next morning, neither one regaining consciousness. The other young man, Morris Plummer was at the point of death when the last word was received from there.

Lois Mildred Atkinson daughter of Mr. and Mrs.:I. II. Atkinson was born near Maxwell, Story county, Iowa, Oct. 21, 1902, and passed away Oct. 22, 1921, age nineteen years and a few hours.
Lois spent her girlhood in and near Maxwell, attending the Maxwell school until the fall of 1917. It was while living there she gave her life to Christ, uniting with the Church of Christ in 1913.

In the fall of 1917 she with her parents moved to a farm near Collins whre the latter now live. She attended the Collins high school in 1919 and 1920. In August of this year she went to the home of her sister, Mrs. Fred Lakin and has been attending high school at Perry, Kansas. She leaves to mourn her departure, father and mother, one sister Mrs. Fred Lakin of Perry, Kansas, seven brothers, lee of Greene, ia., Sid of Collins, guy of Colo, grant of Madrid, George and Devere of Des Moines and Gerald who is at home with his parents. The funeral services were held at the Church of Christ Wednesday afternoon, the pastor Paul Reeves used as his text, Lois' favorite verse, John 3:16. He was assisted by B. A. Gann of Maxwell. Six of her girl friends from the school and Sunday classes acted as pall bearers. The burial was made in the Maxwell cemetery.
