Richard (Dick) Ness, 76, of Ames, and formerly a long-time resident of Story City, died on Sunday, June 29 at his home, and entered the presence of Jesus. Funeral services were on Thursday, July 3 at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Ames with military honors.

Richard was born on May 13, 1932 'in Story City to Cora (Thompson) and Gaylord Ness. He graduated from Story City High School in 1950. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean conflict from 1950-1954, where he received several meritorious medals, including three purple hearts. After returning from Korea he worked at the Atomic Energy Commission and was a Bio Lab Tech at the National Animal Disease Lab 17 years. After retiring from civil service in 1975, Richard was self-employed as a residential contractor.

Richard was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 307 (Roland), the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Men's Bible Fellowship, and Bible Study Fellowship.

Survivors include his wife Norma of Ames; father-in-law Leslie Ryerson of Ames; one daughter Kim Ness (Todd) Fink and three sons, Monte (Jamie) Ness of Phoenix, Arizona, Robert (Dee Danielson) of Ames, Terry Ness of St. Louis, Missouri; three step-daughters, Carol (Bob) Crane of Boone, Sherry (Ben) Poole of Grimes, Julie Osborn of Boone and one stepson Tim (Esie) Fisher of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Eric (Jennifer) Fink of Ames, Brett Fink, Molly Fink of Story City, Tristyn, Nicole and Brittany Ness, Phoenix, Arizona, Bryan Ness, Kansas City, Missouri, Natalie Ness, St. Louis, Missouri, Travis (Chantel) Ness, Brandie (Alan) Gossel, Jamie (Adam) Lee, Joe (Cary) Ness all of Story City, Shane Ness of Ames, Morgan Todd of Grimes, Janey Fisher, Madison, Haley, and Gabrielle Osborn alrof Boone, Nathan and Michael Fisher of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; seven great-grandchildren; a sister Doris (Harold) Childers and a brother Bob (Pauline) Ness of Story City, a sister-in-law Karen (John) Alexander of Woodward.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Gladys Wagner and Sharon Ness, a brother Larry Ness, and his mother-in-law Lois Ryerson.

Memorials may be made to St. Andrews Lutheran Church music ministries, Riverside Bible Camp, or Israel Family Hospice House.

Dick's Marine Corps service memorabilia will be on display at Camp Dodge in Johnston beginning this fall. We encourage you to visit and share in what was one of his greatest pleasures, serving his country.
