Feb. 21, 1926-July 7, 2008

Jeanne Elizabeth Rhodes Ostrem, longtime resident of Ames, passed away peacefully surrounded by her beloved family Monday, July 7, at Israel Family Hospice House. A service to celebrate her memory will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 10, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 604 Lafayette Ave., in Story City.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at Soderstrum Funeral Home, 618 Lafayette Ave., in Story City.

Jeanne was born Feb. 21, 1926, in Adams County, to Admiral R. and Ruth Anna (Tripp) Rhoades. She was of American English ancestry that has been documented in America to 1630. Jeanne was a 10th generation American.

She graduated from Lenox High School, where she was active in 4-H, basketball, track, drama and music. She was employed at the Kaiser Shipyards in Sausalito, Calif., during World War II. She also was employed by Bankers Life in Des Moines, Nims Sportsman in Ames and the Ames Daily Tribune.

She married Curtiss L. Ostrem Dec. 1, 1951, in Des Moines. They were married for more than 56 years.

She was a Sunday school teacher for 25 years, a Camp Fire Girls leader, a longtime Red Cross volunteer and a volunteer at Ames Public Library. She was a member of P.E.O., the Ames Women's Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was an excellent cook who specialized in bread making, beef and noodles, Norwegian dishes and country-style cooking. She was an avid gardener who loved to grow roses, strawberries, tomatoes and other vegetables and flowers. She enjoyed her grandchildren, stamp collecting, painting, bowling, playing cards and ice cream.

She was a member of Lenox United Presbyterian Church, Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, and currently a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City.

She is survived by her husband, Curt, and their children, Jill Elizabeth (John Jr.) Bartello, of Newton, Mark Admiral Ostrem, of Des Moines, and Dawn Elizabeth (Jon) Thrams, of Fort Dodge; grandchildren, Rebecca Elizabeth Bartello (Philip) Reutlinger, of Old Lyme, Conn., Benjamin Robert Ostrem, of Des Moines, John Joseph Bartello III, of Newton, Thomas Admiral Bartello, of Newton, Matthew Charles Curtiss Thrams, of Fort Dodge, and Courtney Elizabeth Thrams, of Fort Dodge; and one great-grandchild, Dylan Tyler Hill, of Des Moines. She also is survived by one brother, Robert (Pat) Rhoades, of Lenox; one sister, Florence Garrick, of Fircrest, Wash.; as well as nine nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Julia Ruth Ostrem; her parents; one sister, Francis Moyle; her mother-in-law, Julia Ostrem; and four brothers, Hal Moyle, John Garrick, Richard Ostrem and Robert Ostrem.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 604 Lafayette Ave., Story City, IA, 50248, or Israel Family Hospice House, 400 S. Dakota Ave., Ames, IA, 50014.

The family would like to thank publicly Dr. Robert Bender of the Johnny Orr Memory Center, Homeward Home Hospice and Israel Family Hospice House for their passionate care of our wife, mother and grandmother.
