THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, July 8, 2008.

Jan. 28, 1954-July 6, 2008

Karen "Kay" LaVonne Eischen, 54, of Eldora, died Sunday, July 6, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 10, at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland. Burial will follow in Roland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at Bergen Fellowship Hall in Roland.

Karen "Kay" LaVonne (Stole) Eischen was born Jan. 28, 1954, in Story City, to Don and Arlette Stole. She attended Roland, Roland-Story schools. She furthered her education at Bernell's Cosmetology School and cut hair for a year. She worked at 3M, Sauer-Danfoss and most recently the Department of Transportation for 18 1/2 years.

Kay's marriage to David Carnahan, of Des Moines, on Oct. 13, 1979, was short lived as David was killed in a tractor accident on Jan. 27, 1980. She married Ed Eischen, of Eldora, on Jan. 10, 1994. Ed adopted Kay's son, Matthew Wayne, when he was around 4 years old. She loved her son and was very proud of him. She called Matt her "miracle child" because doctors had told her she would not be able to have children due to an earlier medical condition. She enjoyed going to Matt's baseball games; it was her favorite sport to watch. Matt's graduation in May, his baseball games and chemo treatments were her outings during the past several months.

She developed a keen interest in gardening and had landscaped her yard to include a pond and several varieties of hostas, lilies and other plants. She also enjoyed figuring out how to do household projects on her own. With the help of a good neighbor and friends, she did siding and shingling on her house and most recently some interior remodeling. Her constant companions were her two collie dogs, Rylie and Katie.

She is survived by her son, Matt, of Eldora; one sister, Jan Stole, of Roland; one brother, Galen (Cindy) Stole, and niece and nephew, Jill and Nick Stole, all of Roland; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and her first husband, David Carnahan.

Memorials may be made to the Matthew Eischen College Education Fund or the Bliss Cancer Center.

Soderstrum Funeral Home in Roland is in charge of arrangements.
