George P. Mellen passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, June 10, after a long struggle with cancer. He was 70.

Raised in Bergen County, N.J., he received a degree in mechanical engineering from Newark College of Engineering and was a registered engineer in several states, specializing in mechanical systems and facilities management. He recently retired as chief engineer from Iowa State University. He and his wife moved to Easton, Md., to be nearer to family.

He is survived by his wife, Alice, whom he married in September 1960. He also leaves three sons, Alan (Pam) Mellen, of Barnegat, N.J., Bob (Cathy) Mellen, of Tallmadge, Ohio, and Richard (Meredith) Mellen, of Maplewood, Minn.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Carolyn Masson; three brothers Clifton, Ronald and William; and many cousins and aunts.

Memorials may be sent to Ames First United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
