Robert L. Sowers, 71, of rural Dexter, Minnesota, died Tuesday, June 15, 1999, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, after suffering a heart attack. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 17, at Zion United Methodist Church in Sargeant, Minnesota. Interment was in the Dexter Cemetery. Casket bearers were Ralph Huxford, Dale Taylor, Darrel Pries, Donald Quandt, Merle Durby and Sterling Meyer. Honorary pallbearers were Kerby Karlsrud, Jorgen Karlsrud, Nicki Johnson, Mandi Johnson, Matt Johnson, Travis Goodsell, Ryan Sowers, Alaina Sowers, Jason Sowers and Jessica Sowers.
Robert Sowers was born April 5, 1928 in Jewell, Iowa to Pearly and Helen Sowers. He grew up on the family farm in Jewell, where he attended rural schools and graduated from Randall High School. On Aug. 8, 1954 he married Sharon Simpson in Renwick, Iowa. Prior to marriage he operated a livestock trucking business in Randall. After marriage the couple farmed in Renwick and Harcourt, Iowa. In 1962, they moved to Pleasant Valley Township, Minnesota, where they have farmed since. In addition to farming, Robert was a dry wall installer and taper for Palmer Soderberg Co. in Rochester, Minnesota. He was a long time member of Zion United Methodist Church in Sargeant, Minnesota, and was also a member of Local #681 Union of Rochester.
He is survivied by two daughters, Julie (Wayne) Karlsrud of Red Wing, Minnesota, and Jolene Goodsell of Stewartville, Minnesota; three sons, Daniel of Dexter, Douglas of Sargeant, and Duane of Racine, Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren; and one sister, Maxine Buckles of Florida.
