Ellis J. Hughes was born November 19, 1856, in Pleasant Grove, Story county, Iowa; was married to Luella L Squires Nov. 30, 1876, in Story county. Three children were born to them, Earl L., born Nov. 19, 1877, the day his father was 21 years of age, and died in Primghar Sept. 7 1902; Alma Ruth was born Sept. 7, 1882, and died July 9 1891; and Edith Dora was born June 30, 1885.
Mr. Hughes and his wife moved to Kansas in 1878 and returned to Story county in 1880, where they resided until April, 1893, when they moved to O'Brien county.
Mr. Hughes was born and raised in a Methodist family, and during the rivival meeting in the opera house 2 1/2 years ago he made a clear and manly profession of faith. During his last illness, extending over a period of ten months, he often expressed faith in Christ as his personal Savior, and died in peace with his Creator and in hope of heaven.
