Eleanor Strawn was born in Green county Pennsylvania, December 5th, 1818, was married to Thomas R. Hughes. November 25, 1839. They immigrated to Ohio from Pennsylvania in 1840 from there to Indiana in the year 1843 and from there to Iowa in 1856. She was the mother of eleven children of whom seven survive her, five sons and two daughters. J. S. Hughes of Ruthven,Iowa; R. C. Hughes of Gracevill, Minn.; E. J. Hughes of Primghar, Iowa; N. I. Hughes of Paullina, Iowa; W. S. Hughes of Kelley, Iowa; Mrs. R. N. Dodds of Ames, Iowa and Mrs. Ira O. Brown of Pleasant Grove.
She united with the Methodist Episcopal church February 5th, 1842, and was a consistent member to the end. She died April 12th, 1909, age 90 years, 4 months and 7 days. The funeral services were held at the Pleasant Grove church and interment there. The funeral services were conducted by the pastor of the Pleasant Grove church, A. M. Elliot, Thursday forenoon at 10 o'clock.
