George Russell Sowers, oldest son of the late James W. and Alice Sowers, was born Nov. 18, 1874, at the farm home of his parents in Milford township. He passed away at 9 p. m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 1953, at the age of 79 years and 15 days at his home in Story City.
George was united in marriage to Martha Nitcher at Pomona, Kansas, Sept. 5, 1906, and they established their home on the farm where Geroge had always farmed. To this union were born three children: Clare of Rantouk Kan.; Jeanette, Mrs. Frank Peikert of Orono, Maine; and Dorothy, Mr. Vere Bielefeldt of Roland.
In 1938 he retired from the farm in Milford township to Story City, where he resided till the time of his death.
He leaves to mourn besides his wife, Martha and children, Clare, Jeanette and Dorothy; 8 grandchildren: Donald and Donna Bielefeldt, Frank and Alice Peikert; Michael, Roger, James and Merlin Sowers; one brother, Dr. James Sowers of Buffalo Center; and 5 sisters: Blanche (Mrs. Homer Boyes) of Nevada; Jessie (Mrs. Frank Montgomery) Mason City; Sylvia (Mrs. Ern Carey) Ames; and the Misses Irma and Mildred Sowers of Los Angeles, Calif.
George had always lived a quiet life, always content with his environment after moving to Story City. His greatest joy was his grandchildren with whom he loved to play. He was "Grandpa" to all the children on the street. His later years were made happy by the companionship of the children and his kindly neighbors.
Funeral services were held on Monday Dec. 7, 1:30 at the Larson funeral home and at 2 in the Grace E.U.B. chruch, with Pastors W. D. Winter and Dr. Shipman of Ames officiating. Mrs. Andy Nelson sang "Blest Be the Tie" at the funeral home, accompanied by Mrs. Arvin Nelson. At the church, Mrs. Robert Hermanson sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages." Mrs. Dorrel Doolittle served at the organ. Interment was made in the Roland cemetery.---probably from the Story City Herald
