Carl Fulk, 58, longtime Slater resident, died Tuesday, April 8, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 11, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater, with a 10:30 a.m. funeral service Saturday, April 12, at the church. Burial will be in Bethlehem Church Cemetery in Slater.

Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care is assisting the family.

Carl Fulk, 58, longtime Slater resident, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday April 11, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater, with a 10:30 a.m. funeral service Saturday, April 12, at the church. Burial will be in Bethlehem Church Cemetery in Slater.

Carl Fulk was born Aug. 14, 1949, in Charles City, the son of Orie and Betty (Shannon) Fulk. He graduated from Rockford High School in 1967. He enlisted in 1967 in the U.S. Marines Corps until 1971 during the Vietnam Conflict. He married Diane Houser Nov. 28, 1969, in Rockford. In 1976, he graduated from Iowa State University. He then owned and operated Peterbilts for the next 20 years before entering Wartburg Theological Seminary, where he received a master of theology in 1999.

He enjoyed many things in his life, including Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Department of Iowa vice commander; Civil War re-enacting as a Sadler, chaplain and a member of the 32nd Iowa Infantry; American Legion of Slater; Disabled American Veterans; VFW; riding Harley-Davidsons; prison ministry, Via de Cristo; participating with tractor rides on Farmall's; Tennessee Walker horses; Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater; and family and friends. He was the recipient of the gift of life through kidney transplants and had worked with Iowa Donor Network.

He is survived by his wife, Diane, of Slater; two sons, Edward Fulk and fiancé, Kathy McMullen, both of Ames, and Jacob Fulk, of Washington; one daughter, Angela (Kevin) Ott, of Slater; his mother, Betty Fulk, of Rockford; one sister, Marlys Rentz, of Stewartville, Minn.; one brother, Lynn Fulk, of Hawaii; and four grandchildren, Johnathon and Elizabeth Fulk, and Micah and Ayla Ott.

He was preceded in death by his father, Orie, and one daughter, Rebecca.

Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care is assisting the family.
