Death came to Maralyn J. Hammond, 76, on Friday, March 14, due to complications of Pick's Disease, which causes dementia. She was a lifetime resident of Slater, but spent her last few months at the Madrid Home.

Maralyn, born on Dec. 27, 1931, in Ames, was the first born of three children to Joel and Flossie Severson. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and educated in Slater Public Schools, graduating in 1949. She was united in marriage to Howard R. Hammond, also of Slater, on June 11, 1950. She was employed locally and at Iowa State University, and was the co-owner with her husband in Hammonds' Mobile Home Park for 48 years.

Except for short military experience out of state, they resided their nearly 58 years of marriage in Slater. To this union was born three children: Marsha, Alan and Mark. She supported church activities and was an active member of the Slater Garden and Study Club. She was a member of the Slater Cemetery Board and also enjoyed gardening, working in the yard and supporting family members.

She is survived by her husband, Howard; daughter, Marsha, and husband, John Lindahl, of Polk City; son, Mark Hammond and wife Ellen, of Johnston; grandchildren, Michael Ray and wife Nicole, of Slater, and Amelia and Greta Hammond, of Johnston; step-grandchildren, Sarah and husband Matt Celski, and Annie and husband Brad Mohns; great-grandchildren, Blake Stephens, Trent, Emma and Ellie Ray, of Slater; brother, Gary Severson and wife Martha, of Slater; sister-in-law, Dorothy Hammond, of Wildwood, Fla.; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Alan; grandson, Jorgan Hammond; sister, Katherine Olson and her husband Robert; sister-in-law, Nettie Hammond; step brothers-in-law Dean and DeWitt Hammond; and her parents.

Visitation will be at Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home, Main and Benton, in Slater from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 17. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Story Street and Third Avenue, in Slater. Interment will be in Slater Municipal Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Madrid Home, Bethlehem Lutheran Church building fund, or the Slater Area Historical Association.

Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
