William H. Britten, 86, of Zearing, died Wednesday, March 12, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Services are pending with Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing.

William Harry Britten, 86, of Zearing, died Wednesday, March 12, in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Bethel United Methodist Church in Zearing, with burial to follow in Lincoln Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 17, at Bethel United Methodist Church in Zearing.

William Harry Britten was born Aug. 25, 1921, in Zearing, to Harry William and Gertrude Alice (Lehman) Britten. He graduated from Zearing High School in 1939 and graduated from Western Union College in Le Mars in 1943. William served in World War II in Europe from March 1943 until December 1945. In 1948, he received his master's degree in journalism from the University of Iowa.

He served many capacities as a reporter, editor and publisher during a long journalism career beginning in 1948 as a reporter for the Worchester, Mass., Telegram. He also was state editor for Marshalltown Times Republican in 1965, news editor of the Denison Bulletin and Review from 1966 to 1967, city editor of the Boone News Republican from 1967 to 1968, owner and publisher of the Zearing Tri County News from 1968 to 1989, and editor and publisher of the Hubbard Review from 1969 to 1972.

He was a Republican candidate for the Massachusetts State Legislature in 1960 and always was interested in local, state and national politics. He was a lifelong member of Bethel United Methodist Church, the Iowa Newspaper Association, the National Newspaper Association, the University of Iowa Alumni Association, and the American Legion, having served as post commander.

He is survived by two nephews, Jerry Britten, of Zearing, and Alan Britten, of McCallsburg; niece, Sharon Britten, of Fulton, Mo.; and many great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Harold; and nephew, Kent.

Fredregill Funeral Home of Zearing is in charge of arrangements.
