Joe Chelsvig

Joe Chelsvig was born December 30, 1868, in Hamilton county, north of Roland. His parents were Charles and Katherine Chelsvig. He died February 4, 1937, at his home northeast of Roland, at the age of 68 years.

He was baptized by Rev. Amlund and confirmed by Rev. C.B. Jacobson in the Bergen Lutheran church in Roland.

May 5, 1897, he was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Cherland. To this union were born nine children. One son, Clarence, preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, and the following children, Cordelia (Mrs. Marion Wierson) of Roland; Tommy and Nettie (Mrs. Weston Olson) of McCallsburg; Hazel (Mrs. John Dodds) of Lyle, Minn.; Josie (Mrs. Sydney Troutner) of Colo; Oscar and Corinne at home, and Dennis of Pasadena, Cal. He also leaves eleven grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Anna Jacobson of Des Moines, and a brother, Nels, of Goodell.

Mr. Chelsvig has farmed north of Roland during his mature years, but the last year he was quite poorly from heart trouble and other complications. His wife and son Oscar, were faithful and kind in caring for him during his last illness.

The funeral was held Sunday, February 7, at 1 from the home and at 2 o'clock from Salem Lutheran church in Roland, with Rev. H.N. Bakke of McCallsburg in charge of the services. O.S. Boyd sang two solos with Mrs. M.M. Eggland at the organ.

The pall bearers were Henry Twedt, Tom Wicks, Iver Gjerde, Arthur Jacobson, Alfred Braland and Geo. Lee.

The remains were laid to rest in the Roland cemetery.
