Ames and area deaths
Grace McCarthy died Tuesday evening
Grace N. McCarthy, 71, of 809 Carroll Ave., died Tuesday evening, May 4, at Mary Greeley Hospital. Funeral services are Thursday at 1:30 p.m. from St. John's by the Campus Episcopal Church. The Rev. Fr. F. Paul Goodland will officiate with burial in the Ames Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. McCarthy was born July 27, 1904, in Gray. She graduated from Lake City High School and attended the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa. Mrs. McCarthy taught school in Audubon County for one year. She came to Ames in 1924. She married Dan F. McCarthy Feb. 10, 1929 in Ames. Mrs. McCarthy worked for Tilden's Department Store and Younkers. She retired in 1973 from the Iowa State University admissions office, Mrs. McCarthy was a member of Theta Chi sorority, the Ames Episcopal parish and Craft Club. Mrs. McCarthy is survived by her husband ; a son, Dan. R. McCarthy of Davenport; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Ann) Singer of Edna, Minn.; her mother, Mrs Elsie Newell of Ames; a sister, Velma Wagoner of Clarinda; a brother, Richard Newell of Buffalo, N. Y. and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father. A memorial fund has been established for the American Cancer Society of St. John's by the Campus-Episcopal Church. Gifts to the church may be left at the church office. The Adams funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The body will not lie in state.
