THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, March 1, 2008.
Clarke Emmanual Boden, 81, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, of fast-acting cancer. Millie Mae Derauf Boden, his wife of 52 years, preceded him in death in 2003.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at Adams Funeral Home, 502 Douglas Ave. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 3, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1435 Wilson Ave.
Clarke Emmanual Boden was born June 18, 1926, in a farmhouse outside of Griswold. He attended Creston Public Schools, class of 1944, and Tarkio Missouri College, class of 1950. He graduated in Business Administration, Accounting and General Industrial Engineering. He was the first in his family to attain a college degree.
Semper Fi, Clarke served in the 3rd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Asiatic-Pacific including the final landing in Japan and China from 1944-1947.
Clarke's vocational adventure began with McDonnell-Douglas Experimental Aircraft in El Segundo, Calif. He then taught business and accounting at College of the Sequoias, Visalia and Exeter, Calif.
Clarke returned to Iowa and worked at Maytag as Vice President of Manufacturing Engineering. He then accepted a position at Iowa State University as Assistant Professor for the Engineering and Management Institute, serving Engineering Extension and Center for Industry Research and Service. His responsibility included teaching undergrad coursework in the college of Business Administration. He is known throughout the state and Midwest for teaching Industrial Engineering and graduate extension courses to industry. Clarke was director of the state of Iowa's Technical Service Program under Gov. Robert Ray. He was instrumental in establishing the State Technical Services at the University of Northern Iowa and University of Iowa. He also advised the Federal Veterans Administration doing administrative research functions.
He continued his consulting as President and Chief Executive Officer for Midwest Professional Resources, Boden Industrial Services and Products International. Clarke, known internationally and nationally, was called upon to speak numerous times at the American Institute of Industrial Engineers, American Society of Quality Control, and the International Platform Association.
Clarke's expertise was called upon to work with Raytheon's Patriot Missile Engineering and programming robotics assembly. He continued using the same robotics system to develop assembly of the high-speed train from Sweden.
Clarke enjoyed extensive travel with Millie and his sons throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, England and Spain.
Clarke served with the Boy Scouts of America, District Board Iowa and Tall Corn Council, Scoutmaster, District Representative and Silver Beaver Candidate.
Clarke also enjoyed many recreational experiences in golf, swimming, sailing, fishing and hunting. He was an astute gardener supervised by his wife, Millie.
Clarke is survived by a brother, Carroll Boden, of Creston; and a sister, Nadine Dorsey, of Visalia, Calif. He is also survived by sons, Mark E. Lampter-Boden and wife Henryka, of Hamilton, Mass., Craig and Julie Boden, of Brea, Calif., Bruce and Diane Boden, of Ankeny, and Todd Boden, of Lexington, Ky.
Clarke and Millie shared their life and love with nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Derrick and Stephanie Boden, of DuPont, Wash., Bryan and Kate Boden, of Beverly, Mass., Matthew Boden, and David Milliken, of Boston, Mass., William Maddox Boden, of London, England, Amy Maddox Boden, of Charleston, S.C., Clarke Maddox Boden, of Galveston, Texas, Randall Boden and Jillian Boden, of Lexington, Kentucky. Holding hands not only led to four sons, nine grandchildren but also four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Brianna Boden, of DuPont, Wash., Hunter Boden, of Beverly, Mass., and Brandon Boden of London, England.
