THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, February 29, 2008.

Jan. 29, 1970-Feb. 25, 2008

Dr. Jason Ross Martin, 38, of West Des Moines and formerly of Ames, died Monday, Feb. 25, of fatal injuries in an automobile accident. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 3, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1700 Westport Road, in Kansas City, Mo.

Visitation will be at noon Monday at the church. A second memorial service will be at noon Friday, March 7, in the chapel at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Jason Ross Martin was born Jan. 29, 1970, at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C. He graduated from Ames High School in 1989. He received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Iowa in 1993, and graduated from the University of Iowa School of Medicine in 1999. He completed his internship and transitional residency at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, his radiology residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, and his radiology fellowship at the University of Iowa.

He was a board-certified radiologist with Iowa Radiology in Des Moines, and was a member of the Iowa Radiological Society, the Radiological Society of North America, the American College of Radiology, the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound, the American Roentgen Ray Society and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He was a presenter at RSNA in 1997 and in 2007.

His interests ranged from photography to ballet to flying, and he pursued those interests with intensity and passion. He never accepted the status quo and always wanted to pursue his interests to the next level. A licensed glider pilot before he earned his driver's license, he eventually became an instrument-certified pilot who continued to challenge himself with aerobatics and testing his instrument flying skills in "real" weather. He began his studies at the University of Iowa on a ballet scholarship, and his athleticism made him exciting to watch on stage.

He also was known for his dry sense of humor and quick wit, occasionally advising his mother to see a doctor when she sought medical advice from him.

Curiosity and passion for learning, as well as his honesty and a stubborn streak, were his hallmarks. He was an organ donor.

He is survived by his parents, Jim and Linda Martin, of Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, Eric Martin, of Nashville, Tenn.; uncles and aunts, Charles and Luella Hilston, of Madison, Wis., Fred and Doris Cox, of Assaria, Kan., Sam Martin, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Diana Martin-Liskey, of Fort Collins, Colo.; great-uncle and aunt, Eugene and Rosemary Spaun, of Ellsworth, Kan.; and cousins, Wayne Hilston, of Milwaukee, Wis., Stephen Hilston, of Spring Green, Wis., Tom Hilston, of Madison, Wis., Amy Miller, of Wauconda, Ill., Julie Martin, of Lindsborg, Kan., Connie Cox-Dorf, of Assaria, Kan., Laura Schachet, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Gina Simpson, of Boulder, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Fred and Amelia Cox and Joel and Ida Martin.

Memorial contributions may be made to scholarships for radiology technologists at Metropolitan Community College (care of MCC Foundation, 3200 Broadway, Kansas City, MO, 64111); Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines; or the University of Iowa, Iowa City.
