Lavern Paulson, 92, of Ames, died Monday, Feb. 25, in Branson, Mo. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at First United Methodist Church in Ames. Visitation is one hour prior to the service.
Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lavern Carl Paulson, long-time Ames resident, died Sunday, Feb. 24, in Branson, Mo. Funeral services will be at 11 am. Saturday, March 1, at First United Methodist Church in Ames. Friends may greet the family at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the church, and are invited to join the family at the church following graveside services.
Lavern Carl Paulson was born Sept. 26, 1915, in Nevada, to Walter and Nettie Paulson. As a young boy, he enjoyed helping on the family farm. He went to school in Fernald and Napier, graduating from Napier High School in 1934. After high school, he worked for the Iowa State Highway Commission, where he met his wife, Margaret. He served in the Iowa National Guard and joined the U.S. Army in 1944. He was a member of the Railsplitters Unit, 84th Infantry Division, serving in Europe where he received a Purple Heart. After returning home, he continued to work for the Iowa State Highway Commission until he joined the Purchasing Department at Iowa State University. He retired from the university in 1979 after 26 years of service. During his life, he was an active member of First United Methodist Church, and enjoyed membership in Izaak Walton League, Ames Lions Club and several community bridge clubs. He also was an active community volunteer and enjoyed several years of delivering meals on wheels. He was active with the garden committee at Green Hills Retirement Community. He always will be remembered for his gentle spirit and his devotion to family, church and community.
He is survived by five children, Alice Paulson, of Branson, Mo., Anita Layfield, of Milford, Del., JoAnn Paulson, of Milford, Del., Mary Bogenrief, of Branson, Mo., and Greg Paulson, of Ashville, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother, Norman Paulson, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and two sisters, Sylvia Holbert, of Stratford, and Bernita Hunt, of Rockford, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Margaret, and one grandson, Jehu T. Layfield.
Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, Hospice of Mary Greeley Medical Center or Ames American Legion.
