Donald E. Cryder, 80, of Ames, died Sunday, Feb. 24, at home. Upon Don's request, his body has been cremated and no visitation will be held. A memorial graveside service will be at a later date in Squire Boone Cemetery south of Boone.

Donald E. Cryder was born July 28, 1927, in Boone County, the son of John and Myrtle (Hitsman) Cryder. He was educated at Jordan Consolidated School, graduating in 1945. He then joined the Army from 1945 to 1947, and served in World War II. He married Ellen Sellers Nov. 24, 1967, in Omaha, Neb. As a young man, he worked with Cryder Well Company. He then owned his own truck line and helped Ellen operate her ceramic shop. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, fishing, gardening, casinos and station wagon cars, as well as his little dogs.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ellen; one sister, Alice Flockhart, of Boone; two sons, Eric Cryder and John Cryder, of Cedar Rapids; three sisters-in-law, Alice (Ron) Bass, of Boone, Elise Collins, of Boone, and Linda Larson, of Ankeny; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Eckley, of Boone; one brother-in-law, Junior (Susan) Eckley, of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews as well as several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Hubert, John R. (Bob) and Melvin Cryder; and three sisters, Edith Irving, Neva Cryder and Lois Gaskill.
