Dorothy Maxine Davis was born Feb. 3, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo. She married Raymond Middleton March 23, 1947, in Sedalia, Mo. They lived in Missouri until moving to Iowa in 1949.
She was a charter member of Open Bible Church in Rhoades. While Ray worked on the building, she was instrumental in locating and hiring a pastor. She fondly recalled the many meals she served to the work crews and the excitement she felt at the completion of the new church.
Gardening was a favorite pastime of hers. She loved flowers and had a vast amount of knowledge in almost every area of gardening. She was blessed with a natural talent for floral design and created lovely wreaths and arrangements.
She was a wonderful country cook. Pies were her specialty. Many people will remember her stand at the farmers market in Nevada. Customers who were drawn in by her delicious pies and beautiful jellies soon became friends.
She was outgoing and had a great sense of humor.
She is survived by her husband, Ray; her six children, including three daughters, Joyce (James) Durbin, of Marion, Linda (Ronald) Shulz, of Collins, and Carol Middleton, of Nevada, and three sons, Michael Middleton, of Des Moines, Robert (Connie) Middleton, of McCallsburg, and Carl (Cheryl) Middleton, of Bradenton, Fla.; six grandchildren, Anita (Jeffrey) Westphal, of Nevada, James (Aimee) Durbin II, of Cedar Rapids, Sibyl (John) Brunscheon, of Ames, Kerrie (Gregory) Mulder, of Huxley, Tania (Mark) Setsma, of Bradenton, Fla., and Aaron Middleton, of Bradenton, Fla.; and nine great-grandchildren, Zachary, David and Duncan Westphal, Reid Durbin, Jaina Brunscheon, Lucas and Logan Mulder, and Grant and Molly Setsma.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
