THE STORY CITY HERALD, Story City, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, January 9, 2008.

Danny Ray Hill, 66, passed away surrounded by family on Dec. 6, 2007 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center after a long battle with heart disease. A celebration of life service was held Monday, Dec. 10, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. at New Life Church in Pleasant Hill, Iowa.

Dan was born Feb. 13, 1941 to Verne and Alice Hill of Story City. He was raised in Story City and graduated from Story City High School in 1959. Re earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree from Northwest Missouri State University in 1964 and 1979. Dan taught for over 30 years in the Corning, Adel, and Harlan school systems.

While teaching Dan coached volleyball, baseball, softball, and his first love, wrestling, which he not only coached but also officiated from high school to Division I college, as well as the USA Olympic Trials in 1972, 1976, and 1980.

Coach Hill garnered multiple awards over the years including a state wrestling championship team at Adel High School in 1970, induction into the Iowa High School Wrestling Coach's Hall of Fame in 1999, and induction into the Adel DeSoto Minburn Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.

Dan is survived by his mother, Alice Sapp of Urbandale; his wife Sharon of Waukee; one son, Duane of Dubuque; one daughter, Dana (Aaron) Lamansky of Clive; four grandchildren, Morghan, Taelor, Jackson, and Brady; one sister, Karen (Bob) Stangeland of West Des Moines; one sister-in-law, Roxanne (Jim) Matre of Polk City, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Verne A. Hill and brother, Verne A. Hill.

Dan will be forever missed by his family, friends, teaching and coaching collegues, students, athletes, and the numerous other people whose lives have been impacted simply by knowing him. We celebrate the life of this great man and his passing into his eternal home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family and will be given in Dan's name to the American Heart Association and the National Kidney Foundation.
