Solon Arne Grau was born May 28, 1918, in rural Newell, to Anna and George Grau. After graduating from Newell High School, he attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, earning a bachelor's degree in music, with a minor in English.
He married Marjorie Brobeil, of Sac City, May 20, 1941. Together they farmed in Sac County for 30 years.
