BESSIE MAY MINGLE

Bessie May, daughter of David Henry and Margaret Elizabeth Mingle, was born in Millheim, Pennsylvania, on September 2, 1875, and died at her home in Maxwell, Iowa, December 28, 1936, at the age of 61 years and 3 months.

When about 10 years of age she moved with her parents to Illinois, locating at Dakota, where they made their home until 1897, when they located in Maxwell and this has been their home ever since.

For thirty-five of the thirty-nine years they have lived in maxwell. Bessie was employed at the Tribune office, first as a typesetter and later as a linotype operator.

Miss Mingle was converted in early childhood and united with the English Reformed church at Dakota, Illinois. After she came to Maxwell she placed her membership with the local Methodist church and has been counted among the most faithful workers and supporters this church has ever had.

She was the oldest of a family of eight children and is survived by her mother, two brothers, William T., of St. Louis, and D. Claude, of Maxwell, also three sisters, Mayme Southwick, of Freeport, Illinois; Katherine Mingle and Elizabeth Proctor, of Maxwell. Besides these immediate relatives there are numerous other relatives and a host of friends who are heartbroken that she is gone but thankful they had the privilege of knowing her, and knowing her, just naturally loved her.

The funeral service was held at the home on Thursday, Dec. 31, at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Frank Bean, of Boone, a former pastor here assisted by the local pastor, Rev. T. J. Pettit, had charge. A ladies' quartet, composed of Mrs. C. I. Kirk, Mrs. Emmet Scott, Mrs. J. B. Scott and Mrs. D. L. Ray, sang two numbers, "Ivory Palaces" and "Beautiful Isle," with Mrs. E. L. Wood at the piano. Mrs. C. B. French and French and Miss Hazel Stark had charge of the flowers. The pall bearers were H. E. Gibson, E. L. Wood, C. B. French, Milton Boster, Earl Rowen and Thos. Dustin. Interment was made in the family lot in the Maxwell cemetery. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful.

In the passing of Bessie Mingle the Tribune family feels a deep sense of loss, due to her many years of service in the plant of the L. R. Shepherd Publishing Co., continuing with her work until her physical condition became such that it was impossible for her to carry on any longer. When she could no longer stand the strain of work at the linotype, and was forced to quit, she relinquished her work with reluctance, but evidently with the knowledge that it was the best thing to do under the circumstances.

With the exception of those in her own home, she will probably be missed by The Tribune family more than by any other person or persons. Bessie was a faithful and conscientious worker, and her loss will be keenly felt, not particularly because of her work but because of the many years of association with her during the time she was a member of the force.

While the present editor of The Tribune has been a member of the Tribune force but 28 years Bessie had been employed here for about seven years before that time, in fact she was one of the first to operate the new linotype which Mr. Shepherd installed while the Tribune plant was located in the building which is now the Sabo harness shop.

Among the relatives and friends from out of town in attendance at the service were: Clyde Southwick and family, of Freeport, Ill.; Mrs. R. L. Laney, Fertile, Minn.; W. T. Mingle, St. Louis, Mo.; M rs. Jay Banks and Mrs. Geo Proctor, of Nevada; Mr and Mrs. Fred Coughenour and son Ronald, of Des Moines, and Rev. and Mrs. Frank Bean of Boone.
