Aug. 16, 1962-Nov. 17, 2007

Sonia Kay Rolland died Saturday, Nov. 17, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames after a 14-month battle with cancer. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 1517 Northwestern Ave., in Ames, with Pastor Randy Gehring officiating. Burial will be in Roland Cemetery following the service.

Sonia Kay Rolland was born Aug. 16, 1962, in Albert Lea, Minn., to Conrad and Mary (Kraabel) Rolland. She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond.

She attended schools in Inwood, Belmond, Hampton and Ames, graduating from Ames High School in May 1981. She attended one year of college at Des Moines Area Community College.

She worked at the North Grand Care Center in Ames, and at the Anderson grocery store in Roland. She moved to Ames in 1992, and worked at Sears for eight years and at the Fareway Grocery Store for one year until her illness prevented her from working.

She deeply loved her family, the Iowa Hawkeyes, her friends, animals, Fareway Grocery Store and Bethesda Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her beloved family: parents, Conrad and Mary Rolland, of Roland; Kim Rolland, of Roland, Kari (Chuck) Burgin, of Indianola, Steven (Joleen) Rolland, of Belmond, and Kristen (Randy) Dougherty, of Belmond. She is also survived by five nieces, Jaclyn Dougherty, Chelsey Dougherty, Shelby Dougherty, Markaya Rolland and Taylor Burgin; and four nephews Jason (Holly) Burgin, Gavin Burgin, Bruce Rolland and Michael Rolland.

She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Bruce; infant nephew, Ryan Dougherty; and her grandparents, Leo and Gladys (Olson) Rolland, and Pastor Maynard and Helen (Henryson) Kraabel.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Israel Family Hospice House, Bethesda Lutheran Church, or Story County Animal Shelter.

Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
