David R. Congdon, 64, entered into eternal life Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. A public memorial service was Nov. 7, in Chatham, N.Y. Cremation rites preceded the service, and no public visitation was held prior to the ceremony.

David Raymond Congdon was born Sept. 26, 1943, in Ithaca, N.Y., the son of J. Lyman and Marion (Anderson) Congdon. He grew up in Chatham, N.Y., and graduated from the Chatham High School. He went on to serve our country in the U.S, Air Force, where he was a member of the Singing Sergeants. He pursued a career as an actor/singer, performing in off-Broadway and regional theater productions. He married Susan Riley, of Bethesda, Md., in 1966, and came to Iowa in 1972 to attend Iowa State University. In 1975, he accepted a position with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad as a brakeman/conductor. After the railroad was purchased by the Union Pacific Railroad, he was one of its traveling computer systems trainers until his retirement in 2000. He was a member of the Railroad Workers Union and he was variously active in the presidential caucuses and local campaigns.

He will be missed by his daughter, Alida Congdon, of Marshalltown; his son, Christopher Miller, of Catskill, N.Y.; his sister, Mariel Wallin, of Chatham, N.Y.; his brother, the Rev. John Congdon, of Fort Irwin, Calif.; and a wealth of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
