Reuel Edward Russell, 85, Ames, died Sunday, Nov. 11, at Israel Family Hospice House. A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames with Pastor Terry DeZonia officiating. Inurnment will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Reuel Russell was born Feb. 8, 1922, in Stoughton, Mass., to Clarence and Frances (Ward) Russell. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Iowa from 1942 to 1945. He lived in Levittown, Pa., for 55 years. He was a steel worker for US Steel in Fairless Hills, Pa., retiring in 1984.

His first wife, Edna Olson, died May 15, 1976. He married Frances Jean (VanDyke) Olson Nov. 22, 1981.

He was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church in Fairless, Pa., and a lifelong member of the USS Iowa Veteran's Association.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Jean Russell, of Ames; three stepchildren, Douglas J. Olson, of El Segundo, Calif., Steven (Janet) Olson, of Roland, and Sandra Erwine, of Des Moines; one nephew, Edward Russell, of Farmington, Maine; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Edna; and two brothers, Don Russell and Dave Russell.

Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Stevens Memorial Chapel.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
