Second Veteran Answered 'Taps': Henry Tetweiler, 89,
Veteran Seventh Iowa Cavalry Buried This Afternoon"Henry Tetwiler, 89, second Nevada Civil war veteran to answer
to "taps" within a week died Saturday evening at 5:30 and was
laid to rest in the Nevada cemetery this afternoon, after brief
services at the family home in the north part of the city by
Rev. Wackerbarth of the Evangelical church."Mr. Tetweiler, a native of Bedford county, Pennsylvania, had
been a resident of Story County since 1860, and it was from
this county that he enlisted in Company G of the Seventh Iowa
Cavalry and served throughout the war."Mr. and Mrs. Tetweiler had lived in Nevada the greater portion
of the time since the war. Of later years they had spent a
portion of their time at the Iowa Soldiers home, but for the
past couple of years had been back in their old home in this
city. He had been failing very noticeably, both physically and
mentally, for the past several months and had been a great care
to his aged wife, and just before the end came she finally
broke down under the strain, and is now confined to her bed."He leaves besides his aged wife, one son and four daughters
living, besides 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren."Owing to the very severe weather, the old army comrades were
as a rule not able to et out to the funeral, and as a body the
Grand army will not be able to have a part in the services, but
Nevada Post No. 48, American Legion, will furnish pall bearers,
a firing squad and guard for the colors and have charge of the
internment, giving the old veteran burial with military
honors."Second Military Funeral Was Held: Henry Tetweiler Laid
to Rest Monday Afternoon With Honors[:ITAL]"The funeral services of the late Henry Tetweiler, Civil war
veteran who died at his home in this city Saturday evening,
were held from the home Monday afternoon at 2:00. The sermon
was preached by Rev. Wackerbarth of the Evangelical church,
after which the body was taken to the Nevada cemetery, preceded
by a military guard and colors, as furnished by Nevada Post No.
48, American Legion. After the body had been laid to rest the
firing squad fired the volley into the west and the final rites
of another of the war veterans were ended."Henry Tetweiler was born May 18, 1835 in Waterside, Bedford
county, Penn., and died Dec. 20, 1924 at his home in Nevada
having reached the age of 89 years 7 months and 8 days."He grew to manhood in his native state and in 1858 came to the
state of Illinois where he lived about two years and from there
came to Story County, Iowa. In 1861 he enlisted in Company G
7th Iowa Cavalry and served three years in the Western Division
among the Indians."In 1866 he came home and Nov 1 of the same year was united in
marriage with Laura A. Robison. To this union six children
were born, five of whom are still living. They are Margaret
Sanders of Byron, Wyo., Hattie L. Arnett of Greenville, Ia.,
Lola J. Ingram of St. Paul, Minn., Irvine H. of Sunnyside,
Wash., and May Foote of St. Paul, Minn. There are 18
grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren."About fourteen years ago Grandpa and Grandma Tetweiler united
with the Friends church and on Nov. 30, 1924, they united with
the Evangelical church."Ever since the war Grandpa and Grandma Tetweiler have been
living near and in Nevada except two years and some months
which were spent at the Soldiers home in Marshalltown."The beginning of his illness dates back three years since
which time he has been failing. During the past year he has
been a constant care and suffered a great deal. The loving
devotion of a faithful companion made the burden lighter."He was released from his suffering on Saturday evening and
passed to his reward. Those who mourn his departure are, his
companion, the children, grand children and great grand
children besides the neighbors and friends.
