Helen D. Larson, 83, of Story City, died peacefully surrounded by her family Saturday, Oct. 20, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Those who wish to join her family in celebration of Helen's life are invited to attend the visitation from 5 to 7 tonight at Bergen Church in Roland. Helen D. Larson was born Nov. 26, 1923, in Story City, to Serral and Belle (Wigen) Munsen. She attended and graduated from Story City High School in 1941. In 1942, she enrolled at the Omaha Electronic Radio and Teletype Institute. Upon completion, she moved to Mellwood, Ark., to work as a telegrapher for the railroad. In 1944, she returned to Iowa to enroll at Iowa State University. In 1945, she married the love of her life, Robert Larson. They lived in several communities during Bob's osteopathic schooling, until starting his first practice in Sac City in 1952. The couple moved to Roland in 1960 and remained in their dream home until their move to Timberland Village in 2003.

Helen's family was her greatest joy. Her life was focused on and around her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always was encouraging them with love, patience and guidance. She found happiness in making her home a beautiful and comfortable place for her family and friends. She was a faithful member of Bergen Lutheran Church, volunteering to serve on church council, WELCA and the Altar Guild. Friends in Service as well as many local clubs and activities were a huge part of her love and dedication to her community. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, golfing, fishing and vacations with her family, attending Bergen church retreats, making candles and crafts, cooking, baking, coffee and desserts - especially chocolate!

She is survived and lovingly remembered by countless friends and family including her daughter, Cheryl (Steve) Sondall, of Marshalltown; son, William (Carol) Larson, of Story City; daughter LuAnn (Jim) Johnson, of Ankeny; grandchildren, Jennifer (Rob) Moran, Tara (Marc) Elcock, Whitney (John) Smaha, Seth Larson, Robert Larson, Sarah Johnson and Emily Johnson (fianc Mitch Holtz); great-grandchildren, Tyler, Carter, Ethan and Noah; brothers, Richard (Katherine) Munsen and Donald (Eleanor) Munsen; sister-in-law, Mildred Thompson; brother-in-law, Rev. Alfred Rau; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert "Doc;" her parents; one sister-in-law, Katherine Rau; and one brother-in-law, Ted Thompson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Bethany Life Community, Riverside Bible Camp or Bergen Lutheran Church.
