Patricia Ritland Willig passed away Monday, Aug. 20, in Philadelphia, Pa., surrounded by her loving family following an extended illness. A memorial service was held Aug. 25 in Philadelphia.
Patricia Lynn Ritland was born April 2, 1941, in Ames. She was the youngest daughter of Everett and Bette Ritland. She grew up in Ames, graduating from Ames High School in 1959. She attended both Iowa State University and the University of Iowa majoring in sociology.
In the early 1960s, she moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., where she met her future husband, Marco Sonnenschein. They were married in 1965 and moved to Washington, D.C. They had three children together.
In 1979, she returned to Ames with her children and took a job in the admissions office at Iowa State. In 1984, she moved back east to Philadelphia and worked in the field of marketing research for a number of years. The past several years she was employed as the assistant manager of a prominent Philadelphia law firm.
Her main hobbies were reading, traveling and photography. She loved animals and had numerous pets over the years. She was an avid sports fan and was particularly interested in the Philadelphia Eagles and the Flyers.
Patt is survived by her mother, Bette Ritland, of Story City; her husband, Louis Willig, of Philadelphia; her daughter, Mara Sonnenschein, of New York City; her twin sons, Eric Sonnenschein, of Washington, D.C., and Craig Sonnenschein, of Chicago; her brother, Michael (Dori) Ritland, of Eau Claire, Wis.; her sister, Rosemary Low, of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and her brother, Mark Ritland, of Ames. She also leaves behind a host of relatives, including several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Everett, in June 1999.
She will be remembered by all of us for her intelligence, kindness, charm, sense of humor and her many talents. She touched the lives of many people in a wonderful and meaningful way. She will be greatly missed.
