Richard Victor Garman was born September 11, 1928, at Wesley, Iowa, to Victor and Edna (Lovstad) Garman. Richard graduated from Burt High School and enlisted into the United States Army, serving in Germany during the Korean Conflict. During the service, Richard was married to LaVonne Meyer on June 30, 1951.
Following his discharge, the couple moved to Iowa where Richard was a mechanic and body repairman. They spent several years in Nevada, Iowa. LaVonne died on September 12, 1983. Richard retired due to ill health in 1994, and moved to Ankeny to be closer to his family.
Richard enjoyed watching westerns on television, a good conversation with people, woodworking, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed bowling and being a scout leader when he was younger. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren. He had many tragedies in his life. He lost an infant son and lost a wife. He took care of his adult son during his treatment and death from cancer. He met all of these challenges with dignity and caring.
Richard died on Tuesday, August 28, 2007, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa, at the age of 78.
Survivors include his son Brian and wife Leslie of Urbandale, Iowa, daughter Pamela MacLaren of Jamul, California, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Kenneth Garman and wife Marilyn of Burt, Iowa, June Garman of Algona, Iowa, Dr. Ed Garman of Spokane, Washington, and Nancy Smith and husband Joe of Ames, Iowa. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife LaVonne in 1983, brother Dr. James, son Allan and infant son David.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 31, 2007 at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona. Interment was in the East Lawn Cemetery, Algona.
