William H. Martin, 71, of Boone, died on Friday, Aug. 24, at the Israel Family Hospice House. Services are pending with Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

William H. Martin, 71, of Boone, died Friday, Aug. 24, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames. Burial will follow in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

William H. Martin was born on Jan. 20, 1936 in Greentop, Mo. to Harley and Etta (West) Martin. He graduated from Queen City, Missouri High School in 1953. He then worked at Armstrong Tire in Des Moines, retiring in 1998. He married Bonnie Phelps in 1981 in Ames.

He loved to feed and watch birds. His favorite travel spots were Yellowstone and the Tetons. He enjoyed old cars, nature and especially his children, grandchildren and pets.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Martin, of Boone; nine children, Randy (Randi) Martin, of Madrid, Lisa (Paul) Beebe, of New Virginia, Sheila (Allan) Tye, of Nevada, Joseph Martin, of Osceola, Sheryl (Steve) Kamm, of Gilbert, David (Stacy) Phelps, of Papillion, Neb., Larry (Laura) Martin, of Waterloo, Lori (Marty) Meador, of Indianola, Brian (Tammy) Phelps, of Roland; 13 grandchildren; mother, Etta Martin, of Greentop, Mo.; brother, Wayne (Betty) Martin, of Kirksville, Mo.; and sister, Shirley (Jim) Bland, of Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Loren Martin; and sister, Lois Martin.

A visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today concluding with sharing memories at 4 p.m. at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.
