Vesta Fern Kidney, 89, of Ames and formerly of Glidden, died Sunday, Aug. 5, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Pleasant Ridge Community Church near Glidden, with Mr. Bill Orlano and the Rev. Joel McLaughlin, her nephew, officiating. Burial will be in Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at the church.

Vesta Fern Kidney was born Sept. 2, 1917, in Coon Rapids, the daughter of Bruce and Iva (Brown) McLaughlin. She was a lifelong resident of the Carroll area. She graduated from Glidden High School in 1935. She married Lauren Kidney Jan. 19, 1938, at her parents' home. The couple raised their family and farmed near Glidden. She moved to Westwood Knolls in Carroll in 2002. She moved to Bickford Cottage in Ames in 2004, and was currently residing at Northcrest's Heartwood House in Ames. She was a lifelong member of Pleasant Ridge Community Church. She taught Sunday school, cared for nursery children and had also been a 4-H leader. She truly was devoted to her church and her family.

She is survived by three daughters, LaVonne (Steve) Farner, of Ames, Lola (Ray) Peters, of Ankeny, and Lila (Fred) Johnson, of Ames; six grandchildren, Steve (Jeanne) Farner Jr., of Omaha, Neb., Tyler (LeAnn) Farner, of Ames, Jeff (Wanda) Peters, of Jewell, Penni (Matt) Godden, of Carmel, Ind., Brian (Marie) Johnson, of Atlanta, and Shannon (John) Berg, of Chicago; 15 great-grandchildren, George, Ellie, Jack and Isaac Farner, Madeline, Savannah, Caroline and Solomon Farner, Molly, Maggie, Luke and Logan Peters, Lauren and Ben Godden, and Avery Berg. She also is survived by two brothers, Bruce (Betty) McLaughlin Jr., of Phoenix, and John (Karine) McLaughlin, of Glidden; and one sister-in-law, Carol (Wayne) Herman, of Glidden.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and one sister, Genevieve Turner.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Ridge Community Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden.
