TRI COUNTY TIMES, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, August 2, 2007.

Alvina M. McHone, of Ankeny and formerly of Slater went home to be with her Lord after a very courageous 5-year battle with lung cancer on July 24, 2007 at the age of 79 years. Funeral Services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 30 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Slater. Visitation was 5-7 p.m. Sunday, July 29 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Alvina was born August 9, 1927 to Tollen and Ella Engen in Cambridge, Iowa where she grew up and graduated from high school. She was united in marriage to Harvey McHone on January 28, 1947 and had 2 daughters, Pamela and Janyce.

Alvina was a dedicated career woman, working many years for Dr. Wayne Severson and Dr. Steven Kruse in Slater and was a favorite, caring nurse to her patients. She entered the political world and served as Story County Auditor for 16 years until her retirement in 1992. She was a church and community volunteer. She served as treasurer of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and was a member of American Legion Post 260 Auxiliary in Slater. Alvina served on the Slater City Council for many years.

Alvina was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 36 years, and a sister, Mildred Fitch, as well as 2 infant siblings. Surviving and cherishing her memory are her 2 daughters, Pamela Stewart of Ames, and Janyce (Tom) Jacobson of Ankeny; 4 grandchildren, Shawn (Karen) Harmon of Cedar Rapids, Shane (Jeni) Harmon of Huxley, Ryan & Mandy Jacobson of Ankeny and 3 great-grandchildren, Brady & Blake Harmon of Huxley and Sheridan Harmon of Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by her three sisters, Thelma Sams of Iowa City, Dorothy Denton of Cambridge, Wilma Kaltenhauser of Slater and one brother, Roger (Grace) Engen of Ames.

Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Slater.

Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home has assisted the family with arrangements.
