Helen A. Sampson, 97, died Sunday Aug. 27, 2006 at the Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha, Iowa. Services were held Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kanawha Lutheran Church. Also included in the service was the celebration of life of Helen's son, Paul (1939-2006). Burial was in Garden City, Iowa.
Helen A. Sampson was born Feb. 24, 1909 in Madison, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry and Mary Sundahl. Helen grew up in North Dakota, Saskatchewan, Montana, and Washington state, ultimately graduating from high school in Nezperce, Idaho. She attended Walla Walla College in Walla Walla, Washington.
In 1935 she married Rev. Perry V. Sampson in Idaho. Together they served Lutheran parishes in Nezperce, Idaho; Clifton, Texas; Huxley, Leland, Kanawha, Calamus, Thornton, and Story City.
Helen participated fully in the activities of the congregations and communities where she lived, teaching Sunday School and Bible School and being active in the various women's groups. She was a gifted Bible Study leader. In addition to raising four children, she enjoyed hobbies of sewing, quilting, knitting, and crocheting. Her special talent was sewing Barbie Doll clothes. Helen will be remembered for her gracious manner, her generous nature, and her charming smile.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; one sister; two brothers; her husband Perry; and sons Peter and Paul.
She is survived by daughters Mrs. Susan (John) Meyer of Holland, Michigan, and Mrs. Norah McCorkle of Okanogan, Washington; and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Patricia Sampson of Kanawha, Iowa. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
