Francis "Frank" M. Skopec, 83, died peacefully Monday, July 23, at Bickford Cottage in Iowa City following a long illness. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 26, at St. Patrick's Church, with the Reverend Rudolph Juarez officiating. Frank's family will be available to greet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Francis "Frank" M. Skopec was born Feb. 15, 1924, in Mason City, the son of Louis and Mary (Churchill) Skopec. Frank married Patricia Guisti Nov. 24, 1954. After graduating from St. Joe's High School in Mason City, Frank enlisted in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. Following discharge from the Navy, he graduated from Loras College in Dubuque and Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Frank served as a Pathologist for more than 30 years for Mercy Hospital until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Kennedy High School Booster Club, The Salvation Army Food Pantry and was very active in the Catholic church. Frank liked to travel and enjoyed running, was passionate about Hawkeye sports and the Chicago Bears and, most of all, loved to spend time with his family.

He is survived by his seven children, Michael (Cindy) Skopec, of Traer, Monica (Jeff) Anderson, of Olathe, Kan., Timothy (Lynn) Skopec, of Iowa City, Gregory (Kathy) Skopec, of Coralville, Paul (Holly) Skopec, of Spencer, Mary (Bill) Skopec, of Iowa City, and Sara (Eric) Stettler, of Plano, Texas; two brothers, John J. Skopec, of Chicago, Ill., and Leo Skopec, of Fresno, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; and his parents, Louis and Mary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The St. Patrick's Church Building Fund.
