Anna Erica Overland, 93, of Story City, died Thursday, May 31, at home. A memorial service celebrating her life will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 604 Lafayette Ave., in Story City.
Anna Erica Overland was born Nov. 20, 1913, in Hamilton County, the eldest child of Lillie (Johnson) and Edwin Overland. She graduated from Story City High School in 1930. She went on to the University of Iowa where she studied liberal arts and nursing and received a combined G.N. and B.S. degree in 1934.
She began her nursing career as a staff nurse on the maternity ward at University Hospitals in Iowa City and after 3 1/2 years was employed by Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla., where she taught maternity nursing in their diploma program. After receiving her Certificate of Maternity Nursing in 1938 from Cornell Medical Center in New York, N.Y., she was an obstetrics supervisor and instructor in diploma programs in Sioux City and Portland, Ore. She also taught students in the Cadet Nurse Corps Program in Oregon.
She was a captain, Army Nurse Corps, from 1945 to 1948, and was stationed in Korea, where she was a member of a Mash unit. After discharge she enrolled at Teacher's College, Columbia University in New York, N.Y. and was awarded an M.A. degree in nursing education-maternity nursing. She then moved on to hold a joint appointment in the College of Nursing and Health at Cincinnati General Hospital from 1949 to 1952. In 1952, she joined the faculty of the University of Iowa College of Nursing in the Maternity Nursing Course and taught there until she retired in 1976.
Her concern for the improvement of nursing care for maternity patients was evident in her involvement in professional organizations.
She attended the first International Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Geneva, Switzerland, and was a charter member of the Great Plains Organization of Perinatal Health. She also attended two International Council of Nurses meetings in Frankfurt, Germany and Mexico City, and the second meeting of the Psychosomatic Medicine Society in Vienna, Austria.
As a professor at the University of Iowa she was an active member of many committees and professional organizations and co-authored the textbook, "Woodward and Gardner's Obstetric Management & Nursing."
In 1976, she retired from her professional nursing career to move to Story City to care for her mother. In Story City she was involved in many volunteer activities including providing information and support to new mothers and serving on the board of Bethany Manor Nursing Home.
She also was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Anna savored and supported life, whether she was taking the train to Luxor, driving to Alaska with friends, preparing a meal, writing a birthday message, talking with one of her nieces or taking joy in the wonders of the natural world. She was a faithful friend and an attentive listener, a source of encouragement and support, a keeper of confidences and a supporter of causes she cared about. The person she was is a gift to all of us who now remember her.
She is survived by nieces Julianna, Kris and Elizabeth (Gene Collerd) Overland, Marci Rollins, Jane (Tim) Moore and Jean (Dave) Horlacher; and great nieces and nephews, Stephanie Disbrowe, Martin, Suzanna and Lawrence Collerd, Cathy, Tracy and Anna Moore, Stephanie Kerner, Dennis, Nick and Jessica Horlacher.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Paul, in infancy, Lawrence and Jesse; nephew, Ed; great-niece, Rene; and great-nephew, Patrick.
