NEVADA - Milo S. Lauffer, 91, of Nevada, Iowa, died May 21, 2007, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Milo was born February 24, 1916 near Thayer, Iowa to Sam and Helen Kinnaird Lauffer. He graduated from Thayer High School. On May 10, 1941, he married Myrl Eileen Huntrods. Milo joined the army in January 1941, serving 27 months in the states and 30 months overseas as a ground Aircraft Observer 518 in the African, Mediterranean (Sicily and Corsica) and European Theaters of War (France, Germany and England) with Battery A 214th AAA Gun Battalion. After returning home he attended York College, Nebraska and received a BA from Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa. He later received a MA in Education from Drake University. Milo was a public school educator for thirty-one years teaching in junior high at Belmond and as an elementary school principal at Wapello and Iowa City. In Iowa City, he was principal at Horace Mann, Grant Wood and Roosevelt elementary schools.

While serving as elementary principal in Louisa County he was elected to president of the County Council - an education organization. After moving to Iowa City, Iowa, he was elected president of the East Central Elementary Principal's Organization.

After retiring, he used his ham radio hobby by volunteering with civil defense while living in Arkansas.

Surviving is his daughter Beth (Robert) Newcomb of Denver, Colorado. His wife preceded him in death in April 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Pauline and Dorothy, four brothers: James, Edgar, Raymond and Marion, his twin.

Services were held Friday, May 25th, at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. Visitation was one hour prior to the service.
