THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, June 6, 2007.

June 1, 1926-June 5, 2007

Audrey Marie Carney, 81, of Ames, died Tuesday, June 5, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 8, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ames with Father Everett Hemann presiding. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Audrey Marie Carney was born June 1, 1926, in Fort Dodge, to Faber and Teressa (Lilly) Parle. She graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Fort Dodge. She attended Briar Cliff College in Sioux City for two years. After college, she returned to Fort Dodge to work at Fort Dodge Laboratories, where she met and married Jerry Carney March 29, 1947. They were transferred to Fort Worth, Texas, where he was branch manager of Fort Dodge Laboratories and she worked as a personal director for Convair Air Craft Company. Their first three children were born in Texas. They moved to Ames in June 1956. Jerry founded Carney Auto Salvage on Highway 69 South. Their other four children were born in Ames. In 1977, Audrey, with her daughter, Mary, purchased the Merle Norman Cosmetic and Maternity Shop on Main Street in Ames. The business gave her three daughters the opportunity to share in her adventure. She sold the business in 1998.

She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, where she served on the parish council and other committees, including RCIA; Catholic Daughters of America; Funeral Committee and Christian Family Movement. She also organized a group of adult volunteers and young people to visit the nursing homes and play bingo with the residents bringing joy and laughter through music and singing.

Audrey and Jerry enjoyed square dancing in Fort Worth and the Red Friars Dance Club in Ames. Lake Okoboji was Audrey's "little bit of heaven," where she taught her children and grandchildren to appreciate the beauty and wonder of nature. Mom will be remembered with each sunset, her favorite daily miracle.

She is survived by three daughters, Peg (Bob) Oshel of Mankato, Minn., Mary Carney, of Ames, and Molly (Don) Anderson, of Muskego, Wis.; four sons, Matt (Kathy) Carney, Tom (Marty) Carney, Tim Carney and Dan Carney, all of Ames; 19 grandchildren; and soon-to-be-born, a great granddaughter; and one brother, Ed Parle, of Fort Dodge.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerry, in 1994; one grandchild, Tim Oshel in 2004; infant sister, Doris Ann; and two brothers, Howard and Don.

Audrey dedicated her life to her children, grandchildren and service to others through her church and community. Her legacy to all she met was her gentle loving spirit, positive attitude, encouraging words and most of all to her family the gift of her deep faith. She will remain in our hearts and memories never to be forgotten.

Visitation will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 7, with a vigil service at 6:30 p.m., at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ames.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Love Thy Neighbor Fund (an ecumenical charity), at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Catholic Charities or Birthright.

Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames is assisting Audrey's family.
