John Berne Herrick, 87, died Thursday, May 17, in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, May 21, at St. Patrick's Catholic Community, 10815 N 84th St., in Scottsdale, Ariz.

John Berne Herrick was born in 1919 in Independence. He received his bachelor's degree, master's degree, and doctorate in veterinary medicine at Iowa State University. After a period of practice in large animal veterinary medicine, he joined the staff at Iowa State University where he served 35 years as extension veterinarian.

Herrick published papers in more than 100 food animal production and veterinary medical journals. He lectured on veterinary medicine in every state in America as well as more than 50 foreign countries. He received many honors during his career and served as president of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, and the Pan-American Veterinary Medical Association. He was also an active member of the World Veterinary Congress. Herrick formulated many disease control programs that are still practiced throughout the United States.

He married Gwen Netcott, who died in 1965. Together they had nine children, Joyce Rodenborn, John Nicholas, Jody Trail, James, Jeffrey, Jennifer Szatkowski, Jerome, Julie Buhrow, and Jacqueline Dummer. Herrick married Joan Kreamer, now deceased, who had four children, Dirk, Gregg, Scott and Ann Ferguson. Beth Pipitone was born of this union.

Survivors include all 14 children; his sister, Delores Lippert; his brother, Robert; 25 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to Gwen and Joan, he was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary; his brother, Joseph; his sister, Virginia; and daughter, Mary Frances.

A visitation will be at 6 p.m., with a memorial service following at 7 p.m., Sunday, May 20, at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Road in Scottsdale, Ariz.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St Patrick's Catholic Community or Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School.
